The Shape of Memories
The structure and organization of neurons are important for the function of the brain. To study these features of the mouse hippocampus, a region of the brain responsible for learning and memory, scientists labeled newborn granule neurons (pictured in orange) in the adult brain. These cells are generated throughout life in humans as well as other animals. With this technique, they revealed the neurons’ exquisite, orderly architecture. Such information may further illuminate the way the hippocampus processes learning and memory.
